CICC Middle East and North Africa Intern
This internship is with the WFM-IGP’s Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC) project. The intern will assist and report to the CICC Outreach Liaison for the Middle East and North Africa. The internship can be full-time or part-time (2-3 days per week) and must be for a period of 3-4 months. Please note that this internship is unpaid.
Responsibilities:
*Please note that this internship is primarily programmatic and research-related, however, there might be occasional requests for administrative support*
• Supporting outreach efforts for the CICC’s regional team, including efforts to increase ratification and implementation of the Rome Statute for the ICC in the region in collaboration with civil society, governments, and the media
• Monitoring developments on the ICC in the region, including contacting NGOs, government officials, academics, parliamentarians, media who are working on the ICC in the region
• Conducting membership research, including updating the membership database
• Assisting with translations between Arabic and English. Possibility of reading/translation in Persian and Turkish.
• Scanning electronic Arabic news media for ICC related articles. Additional possibility of scanning electronic Persian and Turkish news media.
• Undertaking special projects and assignments as needed.
Qualifications:
• Advanced undergraduate or graduate students in History, Middle Eastern Studies, Political Science, International Relations, Development Studies or related field
• Excellent written and oral communication, research and writing skills in English required
• Knowledge of the ICC and/or Human Rights issues of the region preferred
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office software. Familiarity with typing in Arabic (or Farsi or Turkish) preferred. Knowledge of web design welcome!
• Ability to work independently and within the constraints of tight deadlines
• High level of cultural sensitivity, travel, work or internship experience in the region
• Previous experience in a human rights, legal, or research environment preferred
• The intern MUST be able to communicate in Arabic and have a high level of proficiency in reading and writing Modern Standard Arabic. Fluency preferred. Translation experience is a plus Additional languages such as Persian or French or Turkish would be valuable. Native speakers especially encouraged to apply
