CICC Communications/Media Intern

This internship is with WFM's Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC) project. The Coalition seeks an intern for its Communications Section to assist with a range of media and public-information projects. The intern will report to the CICC Head of Communications, among other Section staff. The internship can be full- or part-time (2-3 days per week) and must last for a period of at least three months, with a minimum of 20 hours per week. Please note that this internship is unpaid though full-time interns will receive a small per diem.

Responsibilities:
• Support Section staff with the updating and creation of fact sheets, press releases, content for web updates and other background resources.
• Assist with the research and drafting of articles for CICC publications.
• Monitor media outlets (newspaper, television, radio) for news and developments including thematic issues such as sexual violence, children and victims as they relate to the ICC. The intern will regularly contribute to our listserv digests and our flagship publication, The Monitor.
• Monitor statements made by notable U.S. figures about the ICC.
• Monitor media coverage of the Court’s current situations in Darfur, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Northern Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
• Liaise with photojournalists and help launch an online photo gallery.
• Update journalist database and research media outlets worldwide.
• Help develop media/outreach contacts with youth, college and religious groups.
• Help fulfill requests for information.
• Support staff and undertake special projects and assignments as needed.
• Attend press briefings and meetings at the United Nations

Examples of past internship projects include:
• Calculating aid loss for countries that have opposed the United States’ campaign against the ICC (through Article 98 agreements) and updating relevant fact sheets.
• Researching distribution opportunities for the CICC’s publication, The Monitor.
• Conducting an informal evaluation of the most recent issue of The Monitor through phone interviews with key members of the CICC.

Qualifications
• Advanced undergraduate or graduate work towards a degree in Journalism, International Relations, History, Political Science, Law, Area Studies or related field
• Excellent written and oral communication, research, organization and writing skills
• Attention to detail
• Prior knowledge of the ICC preferred
• Demonstrated interest in international justice
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and media search engines such as Lexis Nexis
• Ability to work independently and in a deadline-driven environment
• Previous nonprofit experience preferred
• Proficiency in English; other languages a plus
• Interest in photojournalism preferred
• Must support CICC’s mission to ensure a fair, effective and independent ICC
