WFM-IGP offers an internship program for individuals interested in learning more about federalism, the United Nations, global governance, the role of NGOs in the development and promotion of human rights and other related issues. In the past, interns have included undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of disciplines.
Internships are normally part-time (at least two days a week) during the Fall and Spring semesters and full-time during the Summer. Internships are generally filled before each semester begins. We also accept volunteers who are not currently in an academic program.
All internships require a proficiency in English and an interest in WFM-IGP’s mission. We welcome non U.S. citizen/permanent resident applicants, however, they must show appropriate authorization to work in the US. WFM-IGP cannot sponsor individuals applying for internships to help them obtain visas.
Internship application requirements and coordinators vary. Please see the individual internship announcements for specific information on what materials are required and who should receive it.
Internship applications must be received by:
Summer applications – April 1
Fall applications – August 28 ***this deadline has been extended***
Spring applications – December 1
STIPENDS
Stipends are given to full time interns. If interns work full-time during any of the sessions, he or she may receive a small stipend for lunch/metro reimbursement. In order to receive this, the intern must work 35-40 hours a week. WFM offers two stipends to students interested in pursuing an internship at the WFM International Secretariat headquarters in New York. The stipends are awarded to two college undergraduate or graduate students each year who have demonstrated commitment and interest in learning about the UN system and issues of international law, human security, human rights, sustainable development, and protection of the environment. The recipients will work full time for 3-4 months, usually during the summer. Preference will be given to students who have good writing and research skills. All interested applicants will be considered for both (if applicable) the Betsy Dana Scholarship and the Jeanette Short Memorial Fellowship based on the criteria indicated below.
Betsy Dana Scholarship
Betsy Dana was a person of extraordinary vision and dedication, who had a special genius for encouraging young people to dedicate their lives to the cause of world federalism and a more cooperative world system. Through her keen insights and innovative projects, Betsy taught us how global citizens can be a powerful force for change. We are proud to continue her work by helping prepare leaders for tomorrow's world. A small stipend which is based on the amount of interest generated from a special endowment fund established in Betsy Dana's honor, generally about $400 USD is available for exceptional female interns who demonstrate an interest in Federalist principles.
Applicants hoping to receive a stipend need to submit all materials required for an internship application. He or she should state their interest in receiving a stipend in the cover letter of their internship application and submit two letters of recommendation, as well as a brief (400-500 word) essay on how the student thinks the world system should be modified or strengthened in order to better solve global problems. Applications for the stipends should be sent as part of an internship application to the International Secretariat in New York.
