  • In recommendation 27 of his report on the Prevention of Armed Conflict released in February 2002, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for action among civil society on conflict prevention. In 2003, representatives from the worldwide conflict prevention community responded by coming together to form a Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC). The objective is to explore the role of civil society in conflict prevention and peace-building as well as develop a common platform for effective action on conflict prevention from the local to the global level.

WFM believes that civil society has a major role to play in preventing crises and violent conflicts and therefore supports the efforts of GPPAC. As a member of the International Steering Group of GPPAC, WFM liaisons with the relevant UN agencies to build support and open channels of cooperation for interaction between civil society groups, the UN, regional organizations and governments on conflict prevention. GPPAC held an international conference in July 2005 on conflict prevention and civil society’s role.
