So-called Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a fact of life. It is impacting a very wide variety of sectors, driving investment and research – but some serious problems need to be addressed. Administrations employ AI to automate the welfare state, often with dire results, and companies are using it to manipulate the users of systems, in some instances opening the door to bad actors trying to subvert the electoral process and undermine democracy.
