The Altiero Spinelli Institute for Federalist Studies has been organizing an international seminar on the island of Ventotene since 1982. This island off the Italian coast is where Altiero Spinelli and Ernesto Rossi, authors of the Ventotene Manifesto, were imprisoned during the Second World War.
Each year, young federalists gather here, with leading experts from the European and World Federalist Movement, to explore federalist thinking on European and global issues. The last event saw the participation of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella. The seminar is a unique and intensive experience in European and Federalist studies. This is the most important federalist seminar in Europe and the world. At least one session of the international seminar is dedicated to global issues and world federalism. There is space for 30 young applicants to the 2022 event, taking place from 28th August to 2nd Spetember.
The Altiero Spinelli Institute will select up to a maximum of 3 young participants coming from AO/MOs of WFM (from outside Europe) and will reimburse 600 euros towards travel expenses. This has been funded by a grant from WFM.
All participants receive, without any cost, full board and accommodation from the lunch of August, 28th to the lunch of September, 2nd (inclusive).
A seat deposit of 100 € needs to be paid in advance by both European and non-European participants, once they have been selected, in order to confirm their participation. The full amount of 100 € will be returned to each participant at the end of the seminar, provided that they have attended all sessions. Instructions for paying the deposit will be given in the notice of acceptance.
Applicants must be 35 or younger on August, 2022.
The deadline to apply to the international seminar is June 20th, 2022.
In April 2022 the European Commission recognized the cultural role of the island of Ventotene and its Manifesto. They became a common heritage of European and world citizens.
In the same month the European Parliament approved a resolution on European civic education in which it recognized Ventotene as the historical capital of the moral and intellectual construction of European values.
In 2022 UEF and WFM will celebrate the Montreux declaration.
For all these reasons the 2022 Ventotene international seminar is a unique opportunity for young federalists.
