Stefan Kalberer joined the Board of the World Federalist Movement in 2023.
He is a democracy researcher based in Switzerland and chairs the Swiss chapter of Democracy Without Borders.
Stefan Kalberer studied History, Economics, and European Global Studies in Basel (Switzerland) before working for the Swiss Parliamentary Services. Since 2021 he works as researcher at the Centre for Democracy Studies in Switzerland.
For several years he has been an active member of several national and international associations. Since 2021, he has been Chairman of Democracy Without Borders Switzerland. He is also an active member of a Swiss foreign policy think tank and has published several blog posts and a policy brief.
Why are you a world federalist?
As a citizen of a small European country that is not a member of the European Union, I experienced the limits of nation states every day. I am convinced that some of the most pressing problems can only be solved globally. I am certain that these problems must be tackled in a democratic and federalist way.
What is the future you are working towards?
I work for a peaceful and democratic world community where we solve our common problems with respect for each other and in accordance with human rights and democratic principles. Polit-ical decisions that affect the whole planet should be made by representative institutions that are accountable to all humanity.
